Rock is the main story protagonist. A Digouter trained from a young age by Barell and Roll of the Casquet Family, Rock serves as their Main Diver as they travel across Terra in search of the Great Legacy.

Character History
Over ten years prior to the events of the game, Rock was found by Barell during an investigation. Appearing to have been abandoned with only a small robotic monkey found beside him, Barell took it upon himself to raise the child as part of his own family.

Under the Casquet Family, Rock received training under Barell's guidance to become a Digouter. During his training, he has shown great physical strength and athletic performance for his size and age. Because of this, Barell has entrusted Rock to be their family's Main Diver, which Rock has gladly accepted. To avoid catching the Guild's attention, Barell gave Rock the surname Volnatto, a naturalization of "Volnutt" (the combined words for bolt and nut). Despite the different surname, the young boy has been treated as family in everything.

When he and Roll first met, she suddenly called him by the name "Rock"; though it was just a playful gesture by Roll, he happily accepted his new name and was therefore named as such.

Personality
Rock has an energetic personality with a strong initative when it comes to getting things done. Though raised surrounded by Digout influences from the Casquets, Rock himself has very little interest in fame and riches, and instead does his Digouts not just out of family obligation, but as a thrill-seeker who loves adventure.

Rock can at-times be simple-minded even when he means well, and his eagerness makes him occasionally naive and needlessly selfless; a trait which sometimes causes him to cause/take more damage than necessary, and can be a source of concern for his family. He can also be slow when it comes to romantic relations, especially towards Roll, which irritates her to no end.

Despite his heavy responsibilities and strength, Rock still shares hobbies and interests typical of his age such as food, sports, video games, comic books, and even the occasional adult magazine; the latter being something he is especiially careful not to get caught with.

Skills & Abilities
As a Digouter, Rock's main ability is his great athletic endurance. Despite being somewhat inexperienced, many years of training has made Rock capable of overcoming large threats and improbable odds by his use of a combination of physical agility and quick wits to fight, both in and out of his Digouter Armor.

When equipped with his Digouter Armor, Rock gains access to a middle-ranged Buster weapon that he has dubbed the Rockbuster. Unlike standard firearms, the Rockbuster grants Rock strong firepower without any ammunition restrictions; coupled with Rock's natural endurance and strong will, this gives him an advantage even in prolonged dangerous situations whether it be within the ruins or fighting out in the open. In addition to the Rockbuster, Rock can also install and call upon special subweapons which form on his right arm to give him a more versatile range of weapons. This is both a strength and weakness of his, as Rock's equipment combined with his occasional hard-headedness can leave him open to incoming attacks or ambushes. Though Rock typically comes out unscathed, this leaves his equipment beaten up and damaged very much to Roll's chargin.

When not fulfilling his duties as the family main Diver, Rock also has some basic knowledge of tinkering with machines, partly as a skill which comes in handy when taking apart old machines and relics found in ruins and as a personal hobby born of his own natural curiosity. Though he lacks advanced disciplines and know-how when it comes to mechanics, his is good with his hands and is often able to help Roll out as an assistant when needed.

Rock is also a sufficiently good driver and airship pilot, and occasionally helps out with piloting when he's not on navigation duty. Though he has yet to get the chance, Rock is also interested in piloting a VS.
Author Notes
The decision to not follow the English naming convention for Rock's given name was because it was unable to imagine "Megaman" as a natural name of any kind, even by Halcyon Days standards. Even if it is arguable that Roll was the one who named him based on a video game character she liked, it would have remained a nickname at best.

On the other hand, I consider the English name "Megaman" to be much better than the idea of using "Mega" as his actual name in the same way "Mega Man Powered Up" does for obvious reasons.
Trivia
  • The spelling for Rock's surname "Volnatto" is based on the DASH 2 manuals for PS1 and PSP.
  • The face covering used by Rock during intense battles is a nod to Rockman EXE's design.
  • The undershirt worn by Rock under his armor is a nod to the "Undershirt" ability from the EXE series which allows taking one extra hit before being defeated, a mechanic found in both series.
  • Though minor, Rock's armor changes slightly in appearance between the prologue and Chapter 1 as a small step towards his RMD2 armor design.
